Throughout the four-week experience, participants will explore their motivation, generate business ideas, build a strong foundation, understand financial management, and prepare for future growth.

Why This Challenge?

The desire for entrepreneurship continues to grow as individuals seek additional income opportunities, explore their passions, and pursue greater financial independence.

Research shows that approximately 62% of adults in the United States would prefer to be their own boss rather than work for someone else. Additionally, more than 6 out of 10 Americans report having had a business idea at some point in their lives.

Yet many ideas never move beyond the idea stage.

The reason is rarely a lack of desire. Many aspiring entrepreneurs simply do not know where to begin or feel uncertain about the path forward.

Honoring the Legacy of the Side Hustle

The Side Hustle Startup Challenge launches during Black Business Month to recognize the long history of entrepreneurship and economic resilience within the Black Community.

For generations, Black Americans created supplemental income streams and businesses in response to restricted labor markets, wage discrimination, and unequal access to capital.

Cooking, hair care, tailoring, carpentry, childcare, music, and farming were not simply side projects. They were economic strategies rooted in creativity, resourcefulness, and ownership.

These efforts helped establish salons, barbershops, restaurants, neighborhood enterprises, and other businesses that became lasting cornerstones of Black economic culture.

The phrase “side hustle” first appeared in print in 1950 in The Chicago Defender, a Black-owned newspaper, describing income earned alongside a primary job. The term represented more than additional work. It reflected creativity, determination, and the ability to create opportunity despite barriers.

Today, side hustles include freelance services, consulting, digital businesses, coaching, content creation, and product-based businesses.

Technology has lowered many barriers to entry, but access alone does not guarantee profitability.

Structure does.

A Four-Week Journey From Idea to Action

The Side Hustle Startup Challenge will guide participants through four key stages of building a microbusiness:

Week 1: Define Your Motivation and Generate Ideas
Participants begin by identifying their motivation for starting a side hustle and defining what success looks like for them. Through guided exercises and the 6 Ps framework—Pain, Passion, Pedigree, Pet Peeve, Profession, and Purpose—they will explore their skills, experiences, and interests to generate side hustle ideas aligned with their goals and market opportunities.

Week 2: Meet Compliance, Structure Your Business, and Do Good
Participants build a strong foundation by learning essential steps for establishing a legitimate business, including compliance considerations, business structure options, and the importance of separating personal and business finances. They will also explore how businesses can create meaningful impact through service, giving, and community involvement.

Week 3: Track Transactions, Manage Inflows, and Manage Outflows
Participants develop the financial habits needed to manage a sustainable microbusiness. They will learn how to track income and expenses, understand cash flow, evaluate pricing and revenue opportunities, control costs, and use financial information to make informed business decisions.

Week 4: Optimize Taxes and Build Your Team
Participants prepare for long-term growth by exploring proactive tax planning, organized recordkeeping, and strategies to legally reduce tax liability. They will also identify the advisors, mentors, contractors, and resources that can support their continued entrepreneurial journey.
